What is a building prestart?

Building a home is hugely exciting and the prestart process is a highlight. After signing your building contract, the prestart is the first time you get to really visualise how your new home will look. Everything from floor plans to tiles, paint colours, handle selections and more is covered throughout this important pre-construction phase.

Prestart selections

But while it’s easy to get carried away in the fun of it, a thorough approach is key as it can be costly to make changes after you’ve signed off on your prestart. This is why it pays to employ a professional - not only does a professional interior designer have a creative eye but also practical, familiarity with the process. Here at YU Interior we have helped countless clients navigate the prestart process over the years.

Our interior design team will listen to your needs and provide expert advice. The basic elements of design (line, direction, shape, proportion, texture, colour and pattern) are carefully considered when putting together the scheme for your home. All aspects of the prestart will be fully documented and relayed back to your builder to ensure the build runs smoothly.

Clear communication means less stress for you, fewer delays and the confidence that everyone is on the same page. Given our attention to detail, you will likely save money in the long run too as costly changes will be avoided.

Prestart selections

You are invited to our studio for us to view your plans and discuss exterior selections as per your builder’s agenda. We help you choose all colours and finishes for your exterior and we also touch base on the interior surfaces and lighting plans.

Following this meeting we will prepare a selections report to be emailed to you and your builder. Samples of paint colours, render and other potential external finishes will be sourced for you.

We will meet you at your nominated tile showroom to select tiles, benchtops, cabinetry, and interior paint colours. Following this meeting we will prepare a selections report to be emailed to you and your builder. Where possible, tile, laminates, wood and other appropriate samples will be sourced when your selections are finalised.

At the studio, we will review and confirm the exterior scheme and review initial interior selections. We will also complete interior selections for the internal doors and hardware, skirting and cornices. We will also discuss furniture layout and review your lighting plan – a furniture layout will help determine if you have enough power points and if the existing ones need to be repositioned. Adding them in later can be costly. Following this meeting we will revise your selections and email them to you and your builder.

Building plans

This will be a site meeting with you and your builder, usually at lock up stage, to advise on any final decisions that need to be made. We will also discuss our window treatments and interior design services to help complete the home of your dreams.

After the prestart, you can start thinking about all the other aspects of your home’s interior design. From window coverings to wallpaper, soft furnishings, accessories and furniture, it can all be selected and arranged to coincide with moving into your new home.
