When selecting key basics like your quilt cover, coverlet and sheets, it’s best to purchase them in neutral hues given the significant set-up costs. This also gives you a neutral canvas on which to mix up your cushions and throws according to new trends or your own changing tastes.

Also, considering how much time we spend in bed (eight hours a day on average), it pays to buy the best quality linen that you can afford.

Don’t be afraid to mix different patterns and prints as doing this injects your own personality into the space, and brings your neutral background to life. If a patterned quilt is too much, patterned sheets are always a good option – they also create an element of surprise when you pull your quilt back.

Also, you don’t necessarily have buy a matching bed linen set. A lot of brands allow you to buy the pieces separately and come up with your own unique combination which imbues the space with so much more of your personality.

Adding texture immediately adds a layer of warmth and comfort while softening the hard finishes in the space. Whether it is with sheer curtains, a chunky knit or sheepskin throw (depending on the season), additional texture will instantly make your bedroom feel more inviting.

A stylist’s trick from way back, use a bed quilt size that is one size larger than your bed (for example, a king quilt on a queen bed) so that it drapes generously over the side of the bed, making it look much more luxe.

With a neutral base colour as the perfect back drop, be bold with your cushion and accessory choices and inject a strong hue to create interest. Choosing your favourite hue is usually the safest way to go.
